about

Finger to the Forty is the first of several songs lamenting on the impoverished music landscape of the 1990s when strategic marketing fully dictated what could and could not be played on the radio. Cartwright and Hayes invite listeners to “pump up the middle finger "to the mother of all market-driven formats, Top 40. The track's rhythm features drummer Kenny Owen’s swaying backbeat perched precariously atop Kelly Butler’s pop bass line. DJ Loko’s skittering interjections ride on top – Fu, Fu, Fu, Forty! The mix has the structure of a dub track, or is it a prog rock track? Guitarist Glen Cummings plays a nylon string Gibson Chet Atkins CEC through a Marshall 50 watt combo - sounding both jazzy and oddly rubbery.

lyrics

I need funk to slam dunk off the eardrum
The diggidy-dumb-dumb can come and get some
Cause the end doesn’t justify the means of the flow
Higgidy-ho-ho and a bottle of rum

Well don’t play them, its too hard core
Huh? Does that mean it’s too hard for top forty?
They can’t understand,
that I am a man, and I gotta mike in my hand
Maybe, they talk too loud
Maybe the songs that I sing will make them little kids proud
Or disagree, or make noise - ooo
A to the E to the I-O-U
You must agree its a force to be reckoned with
So smoke it like a spliff
Cause I can’t comprehend my flow without the N-O, the R-A, the D-I, the O

chorus

Pump it up
Pump the finger to the forty
Pump, pump, pump
You can’t please everybody
N-O, R-A-D-I-O

Imma break it down for the show, Yo ho
Here we go on a mission, an Imma let you know
What’s goin on, or rather what’s goin wrong
Now one of these things just don’t belong

See I won’t hop to the pop to get paid
I stay true to you, so listen when I say
That the main thing is not to be mainstream
Add reality to a kid’s dream

Cause that’s the essence of the underground
The rhythm, the rhyme so tight and profoundly stated
Sometimes its underrated
Known to bemilitant or politically related

Now some don’t play my shit
They can get the planters, the cashews, the nuts, the whole bit
Yo, and here’s the middle finger
And if you’re down with The Corps, let me hear you sing it

chorus

Now we never get played on them radio
And if your not already known, you don’t get played on that show
Is that how it goes?
I tell you the B-U-L-L shit’s got to stop
in they name of love

I’m not into the smoke, but its a hell of a shot
From them gat as I rat upon the ill
Top forty, they playing Lets Make a Deal
But they gets no sellout, they can get the hell out
The Beast will never quit and Hard Corps will never bailout
Just to make a quick buck
You got me fucked up, Pump it up

chorus
